Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation

Establish a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation establishes a framework to improve the environmental sustainability of products and to ensure free movement in the internal market by setting ecodesign requirements that products shall fulfil to be placed on the market or put into service.

The main objectives of this regulation are to reduce the negative life cycle environmental impacts of products and improve the functioning of the internal market. In addition to contributing to the objectives of EU industrial policy to boost the supply of and demand for sustainable goods, deliver on sustainable production, and ensure a level playing field for products sold on the internal market.

The framework shall elaborate on specific requirements related to the following product characteristics:

  • Durability and reliability
  • Reusability
  • Upgradability, reparability, maintenance, and refurbishment
  • Presence of substances of concern in products
  • Energy and resource efficiency
  • Recycled content in products
  • Remanufacturing and recycling
  • Carbon and environmental footprints
  • Expected generation of waste materials.

The regulation also establishes the use of a digital product passport, to provide the setting of mandatory green public procurement criteria and creates a framework to prevent unsold consumer products from being destroyed.

This Regulation shall apply to any physical good that is placed on the market or put into service, including components and intermediate products, and to all manufactures of products (and their economic operators, such as importers and authorised representatives) who wish to make available for sale or place these products on the market of the EU or EEA. However, there are some products for which it may not apply, as well as special rules for the placing of products on the markets of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
