DNV Business Assurance issues its first energy management system (EnMS) certificate to the flagship unit of Brandix Group of companies, Brandix Casualwear Ltd., Seeduwa, Sri Lanka.

The energy management system (EnMS) standard enables an organisation to achieve its policy commitments, take action as needed to improve its energy performance, and demonstrate the conformity of the system to the requirements of the standard. “With this ISO 50001 certification, Brandix has added yet another milestone to its many green ambitions,” says Kanagarajah, Manokaran, Project Manager, DNV Business Assurance India, adding, “And we are happy to issue our first ISO 50001 certificate to a committed eco-friendly company like Brandix.”
The Eco Centre of Brandix which is a sprawling 130,000 square foot Green factory manufacturing apparel for Marks & Spencer (M&S), situated at Seeduwa, Sri Lanka was extensively audited by the DNV Business Assurance team and was found complaint to the ISO 50001:2011 standard.
Cleaner and greener environment
Emphasizing on the need of energy management standards like the ISO 50001, Iresha Somaratne, Head of Environment & Energy Management at Brandix said that, “More than one billion people in Africa, Asia and South America have no access to proper energy. It has been estimated that global industry will have to reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent to address this problem. At Brandix, we look at local as well as global priorities in our drive for environment-friendly manufacture.”
Eliminating the perception that the EnMS standard is applicable only to the energy sector, Manokaran says that, "This standard establishes a framework for industrial plants and commercial facilities to manage energy, so that energy efficiency increases, costs are reduced, and less impact is made on the environment,” adding he says, “Hence the ISO 50001 standard certification is valuable for all types of energy intensive organisations, including fertilizer, paper, chemical, transport, iron & steel, engineering, port trust, commercial buildings, and food companies, among others.”
“Adopting the ISO 50001 standard, can help organizations meet the increasingly strict Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) certification requirements,” avers Manokaran.
Looking forward
Many large companies have expressed interest to know more about the benefits and applicability of the recently released ISO 50001 standard. “Very soon we will also begin work on our second EnMS project in India. We are positive that the ISO 50001 certification will generate a huge interest not only in the Indian markets but worldwide as well,” concludes Manokaran.
