DNV co-sponsored the grand 60yrs anniversary celebration of ‘The Marine Engineering and Research Institute’ (MERI), formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), India’s oldest and best known marine engineering college situated at Kolkata.

DNV Maritime India sponsored DMET-MERI - India’s national institute for the training of Marine Engineers – grand 60th Diamond Jubilee celebration, held in Kolkata on the 13-14 Dec 2010. The eventful celebration was attended in large numbers by DMET-MERI alumni, who came in from different parts of the world to cherish their old memories with the institute. Besides the large turnout of Ex-Cadets, the event was a good meeting place that involved the who’s-who of the Maritime fraternity.
A good meeting place
DNV along with some of the reputed names from the Maritime industry such as Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), ABS, Lloyd's, Anglo Eastern Shipping, Great Eastern Shipping Company, Shipping Corporation of India, co-sponsored the DMET-MERI diamond jubilee celebration.
"The event was positive for us," says Mr. Sanjiv Mishra, District Manager - Visakhapatnam, adding, "Being a part of DMET-MERI's diamond jubilee celebration gave us the opportunity to further reinforce the DNV brand. Also, at this event we bumped into our old friends from the maritime fraternity and caught up with each other while the joyous event unfolded.”
Presenting a paper at the technical seminar
Sanjiv Mishra presented a technical paper on "Occupational Hazards-Risks of Seafarers & Safety measures" to young DMET cadets, who very soon would put their training into practice onboard a vessel. The basic aim of the presentation is to caution cadets with possible on-board risk and to discuss the precautions and safety measures that need to be taken to mitigate these risks.
This technical seminar which was organised by DMET-MERI also saw participation of dignitaries from the Maritime sector. Capt J. C. Anand (Chairman IRS) was the chief guest of the technical seminar, while the key note address was delivered by Mr. Amitav Banerjee, Chief surveyor, I/C, representing Indian flag administration. Towards the end, the note of thanks was given by Executive director of Indian Steam Shipping, Mr. Arun Sharma.
