Shortage of skilled managers at the junior and middle management level, is the main challenge faced by the shipping industry today. In addition, new requirements from class societies and regulatory bodies, together with rapid technological developments, makes maintenance of competence and capacity a real challenge for individuals and organisations working in the maritime industry.

To tackle this challenge, Mr. N. Venkateswaran, Academy Manager, India, Sri Lanka said that, “DNV has taken the lead to address this challenge by offering the maritime industry with a comprehensive learning portfolio, with focus on enrichment and development of skills of shipbuilding engineers, ship owners/managers, shipboard officers, ship design institutions, maritime industry manufacturers and other maritime related institutions.”

DNV is equipped to offer its maritime training services in the Indian market and anywhere in the world, because of its presence in approximately 300 offices in 100 countries across the globe. DNV conducts public courses, in-house courses and customised competence management services, with a professional learning concept, designed to safeguard and improve business performance.

“DNV Academy continues to reinforce its position in India as a maritime partner dedicated to improving technological competence for ship management & operation, thus enabling ship owners/ managers and senior officers onboard to move up the technological know-how ladder. DNV is doing all it can to help ensure that there is a strong pool of maritime related employees for the next generation,” said Venkateswaran.

“With our foresight to be identified as a leading and reliable provider of maritime knowledge and experience, DNV Academy is looking at avenues of partnership with leading maritime institutes, to deliver the ship managers, owners, and senior shipboard officers (SMO) courses here in India, said an optimistic Venkateswaran.

Further adding that, “Coming July 2009, the 6 months Post Diploma in Shipbuilding for graduate engineers will be offered in partnership with the biggest Maritime Institute in India - the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET).”

Moreover, we are negotiating with product manufacturers, such as machinery, paints, cathodic protection manufacturers, to deliver some specific courses,” said Venkateswaran.

Looking ahead
Commenting on the future plans for DNV Academy in India, Mr. Venkateswaran said, “We plan to do competency gap analysis and training-needs workshop with shipyards, followed by design and delivery of in-house programs to address these gaps.
