DNV conducted its first Port State Control (PSC) seminar in Mumbai, with the aim to support Managers appropriately deal with Port State Control (PSC) inspections and help reduce the risk of detentions.



A Port State Control (PSC) seminar was successfully conducted by Maritime India in Mumbai on 10th Nov 2009, with the key goal to increase awareness on the PSC challenges ahead and introducing DNV’s PSC Tool Kit as an aid to assist customers to reduce the risk of detention.
Reinforcing clients commitment to Port State Inspections
There was a large turnout of participants at the PSC seminar, mainly consisting of personnel’s from the technical, safety and quality departments of shipping companies such as Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, EMS Ship Management, Essar Shipping Ports & Logistics, Great Eastern, Varun Shipping, Mercator Lines, Great Offshore, to name a few.
The seminar was addressed by DNV’s Senior Surveyor and Coordinator for PSC Activities, Niki Mowinckel, who extensively covered key aspects such as; background and scope of PSC, updates on the various PSC regimes, how to avoid and/or handle detentions, critical technical issues frequently subject to detentions, and how important elements of management systems such as ISM and ISPS help.
Talking about the need and the significance of PSC, Niki says, “We have to take to our customers the message that, PSC is here to stay. It is a service rendered for the maritime industry in their efforts to eliminate substandard shipping.”
She goes on to say that, “Likewise, DNV is also committed to quality and safety, and hence it is important that we work together to sustain quality shipping. The PSC awareness session is just the beginning and DNV will continue its efforts to keep the customers informed of any new developments and also help them maintain and improve their relations with the Indian PSC authorities.”
