The way we build vessels and oil and gas installations has changed: Today, the amount of non-avoidable software and communication systems (ICT) has increased dramatically, and so have the possible implications of malfunctions.

The industrial software research program is focusing on developing cost-efficient solutions to increase dependability of software, by making ICT more dependable in itself, and by identifying novel approaches for the day-day usage of ICT. The aim is to enhance present knowledge tied to complex industrial software installations, in which technology is increasingly important.

Enhancing safety at sea by using 3-D attention zones

Collisions or grounding of ships can often be traced back to "human errors", i.e., misunderstandings, fatigue, stress or simply inattentiveness. This project implements the zone concept from aviation industry to the maritime sector.

Safe Maritime ICT (SMICT)

The SMICT project develops simple to use methods and criteria leading to higher trustworthiness and safety for onboard software-intensive systems, in particular systems affecting essential functions such as propulsion and steering. This is important, as the amount of functionality and value that is created by software is increasing.
