Modern society, flag and port state, customers and other interested parties require that today’s shipping industry takes a responsible attitude to safety of life and property and to protection of the environment, and to satisfy customers’ requirements. These needs are the driver for shipping companies to establish and maintain management systems for safety, environmental protection, occupational health and quality.

Various international codes and standards are setting obligatory requirements to your management systems. These are:

  • The International Safety Management (ISM) Code - by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)
  • The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code - by IMO
  • The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006) - by the International Labour Organisation (ILO)

In addition you may have chosen to follow voluntary international safety, environmental and quality standards like:

  • ISO 9001 : 2000 - Quality Management Systems - Requirements
  • ISO 14001 : 2004 - Environmental Management Systems - Requirements with guidance for use
  • OSHAS 18001 : 2007 - Ocupational Health and Safety Management Systems
