Ship classification

Classification is a special type of certification particularly applied to confirm that the maritime structures and facilities comply with requirements. Classification implies that requirements are set by the classification society, i.e. the same third party that performes the classification. The requirements are specified in the DNV Rules.

Statutory services

DNV is authorised by more than 80 flag administrations to carry out statutory certification on their behalf. Our international network of approval centres and more than 300 survey stations in more than 100 countries are essential for our certification activities.

Certification of materials and components

As part of classification, DNV also certifies all materials, components and systems relevant to safe operation and quality of ships. Our design assessment, type approvals and production assessments ensure that systems and components are fit for their purpose.

Design & logistics

As a part of our pre-contract offering, we provide services and tools to assist in early stage ship design and fleet/chain improvement. Our aim is to avoid sub-optimal solutions and improve particularly the energy efficiency, by evaluating a single ship design either alone or in relation to its perfomance in the entire maritime logistics chain.
