Technical+analysis+%26+simulations

Simulating how a structure or system responds to certain conditions is vital to complex projects. To deliver this, DNV provides a wide range of analyses and simulation tools. The ability to simulate complex systems, structures and components with purpose-made software is considered a real strength in any project. Analysis and simulations are part of the core competence in DNV. We execute a large number of analyses on a regular basis, both with in-house developed software and commercially available software.

Purpose

The purpose of these services is to predict the performance of a structure or system in order to document compliance with codes and standards, to optimize a system or support a decision-making process.

Benefits

DNV provides access to a broad range of advanced simulation tools. Your project will benefit greatly from DNV’s system knowledge and experience; our analytical experience allows us to use the best available analysis tools to solve your large and small challenges effectively. The benefits of these analyses depend on the actual project but can include:

  • Accurate prediction of the performance of your structure or system
  • Prediction of the margin to failure for multiple load conditions
  • Prediction of complex operational loads
  • Verification of analytical models with test results
  • Extrapolation of test conditions based on calibrated analytical models.

Our approach

In DNV we can combine multiple analysis techniques to solve complex problems, such as the impact to the global response of a vessel based on weather and wave loading, and the effect this has on the fatigue life of the well head when connected to a riser. Some of the analyses that we perform are:

  • Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic analyses of floating objects with and without forward speed, as well as hydrodynamic interaction effects (coupled analysis)
  • Wind, wave and current loads and static/dynamic analyses of fixed structures
  • Simulation of higher order wave effects (e.g. ringing and springing)
  • Simulation of floating objects connected by offloading and transfer lines
  • Riser (flexible, SCRs, TTRs, C/WO, towers) mooring and umbilical time domain analyses
  • Interaction/collision analyses (e.g. risers, umbilicals and moorings)
  • Thermal analysis
  • Vortex induced vibrations
  • Vortex induced motions (model test input usually required)
  • Simulation of complex marine operations
  • Simulations in connection with wave action on deck loading, sloshing etc.
  • Non-linear analysis (e.g. material properties, geometry, thermal, contact, etc.)
  • Structural response to fire and explosion loads
  • Dynamic analysis (impact, transients, resonance, response, etc.)
  • Dynamic simulation of multi-phase flow
  • Slugging, thermo hydraulic, ‘water hammer’ analysis
  • Sand management – acceptable sand rate strategy (DNV RP-O501)
  • Sand transportation/accumulation and erosion
  • Hydrate and wax prediction and management.
