Biorisk

Biorisk encompasses biosafety and biosecurity, where the hazards are biological agents and its toxins. DNV has worked with many world leading agencies involved in research, diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. We have a team of experts with experience in operation of scientific environments, and have developed a practical and effective approach in managing both biological and non-biological biorisk.

Biorisk services

As public awareness of potential threats from biological agents increases, careful management of biosafety and biosecurity have become vital organisational issues. DNV has not only used our expertise in applying biorisk management principles and strategies, in areas of biological containment and other sectors working with potentially harmful biological organism, but also to areas relating to pandemic preparedness and business continuity planning within the organisation.

DNV has adopted a risk based approach of managing biorisk that is able to help your organisation to manage these risks in laboratory and non-laboratory environment effectively.

We provide a wide range of services and training and do contact us if you need to understand more specifically on how these services can be applicable to your organisation.

CWA 15793 laboratory biorisk management system certification

With the growing awareness of risk associated with biological agents and toxins, formal certification will provide an assurance that the biorisk management system is effectively implemented and regulatory requirements are fulfilled. It is also a public declaration of organisation’s commitment to protect the staff, the community and the wider environment.

BSL3 facility certification

A process whereby a laboratory is independently assessed and certified against criteria derived from the World Health Organisation Biosafety Manual. The approach reflects internationally recognised certification principles.

Laboratory commissioning & validation

Commissioning and validation provides assurance that all relevant measures in the specification have been incorporated into the finished facility.

Facility risk assessment

Facility risk assessments have an enormous potential to improve the safety of a laboratory facility by recognising and eliminating potential problems at the design stage. A number of recognised approaches can be used and this includes SWIFT, HAZOP, AR&M and SIL studies.

Training

DNV Biorisk has designed a series of training courses to provide laboratory managers, biosafety personnel and scientific staff with the required skills and aptitudes necessary to effectively manage biorisk.

Biorisk – a global issue

The management of biosafety and biosecurity (collectively know as biorisk) have become a vital global issue, especially in light of the laboratory-acquired cases of SARS in Singapore, Taiwan and China in 2004.

Combating avian flu

Indonesia is now the country with the highest number of human fatalities caused by the H5N1 influenza virus, often referred to as ‘avian flu’. In an effort to tackle the deadly disease, the prestigious Eijkman Institute in Jakarta has built a new biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory – with the help of DNV.
